AM General Defends Delayed JLTV A2 as Congress Eyes Cuts

Congress is threatening to gut funding for AM General's JLTV A2 program. House defense appropriators this week proposed cutting $133 million from the vehicle's $245 million budget and redirecting the money toward off-the-shelf alternatives — citing production delays now running more than 20 months behind schedule and roughly 2,000 vehicles in arrears. [1]

In 2023, AM General upset the incumbent Oshkosh Defense with its A2 variant, becoming responsible for the transition from one supplier to another. As of June 12, the Army had accepted just 82 trucks and 303 trailers. [1]

Chadbourne says the company intends to reach full-rate production by 2027. The committee, however, is not waiting. [1]

What plays out here is a familiar tension in defense procurement: a next-generation program promising future capability, stalled against an urgent, present-tense readiness problem. The committee's patience has run thin.

The Marine Expeditionary Units and Marine Littoral Regiments — the formations most exposed to the delay — are watching. [1]
