Aztec's Tierra Upgrade Patches a Proof-Forge Flaw

Aztec has shipped Tierra, the sixth alpha of its privacy-focused Ethereum L2, closing a critical vulnerability that made shipping an entirely new rollup the only remedy — and roughly doubling client-side proof speed in the process. [1]

The flaw, disclosed on Aug. 7th, allowed an attacker to potentially forge a proof the V5 network would accept for a transaction it should have rejected. Because the rollup contracts are immutable, the only remedy was shipping an entirely new rollup — which is what V6 is. Aztec says it has also formally verified core pieces of the proving system and added an AI-driven security testing harness. [1]

Performance gains are concrete: private proofs now take about 1 second on native hardware, versus roughly 2.5 seconds for a token transfer on V5. Deposits from Ethereum, which used to average two minutes to land, now arrive in roughly 12 to 30 seconds thanks to a reworked inbox. [1]

A wave of private apps launched alongside the upgrade. Aztec Labs relaunched zk.money, its private payments product, three years after shutting down the original. Also in the lineup are Galactica's Private Inference — pay for GPT, Claude, and open models from a private balance — plus Nemi, a private DEX currently waitlist-only, Xochi for private intents, the Nulo wallet, and Olla liquid staking for AZTEC. [1]

The pairing of a security overhaul with a consumer app push signals a maturing posture: credibility and usability, arriving together rather than sequentially.

The chain switched to V6 on Oct. 26th after a token-holder vote; today marks the public launch and rebrand. V5 stays funded for about 30 days so stragglers can migrate. [1]
