Ethena's Basis Trade Goes to Wall Street
A new framework lets USDe tap equity perpetuals on Binance and OKX — opening a $150T+ market, with a structural fault hiding in plain sight.
By The crypto-money Desk

Ethena has spent two years building a synthetic dollar on top of crypto funding rates. Now it wants to do the same thing with Apple, NVIDIA, and SpaceX. [1][2]
The arithmetic behind the move is simple. Crypto perpetual markets represent roughly $2.5T in assets. Tokenized equities, in theory, give Ethena access to a $150T+ market of real-world assets. [1] That gap is the entire logic of the expansion.
The distance between a good idea and a working trade is where most of finance lives. Here, that distance is measured in basis points, weekend hours, and the question of who actually holds the shares.
Kairos Research measured equity perpetual markets across four venues — Binance, OKX, Bybit, and Kraken — and found roughly $2.9bn of one-sided open interest. [2] The team verified every tokenized spot instrument onchain and backtested the hedge through two earnings seasons, eleven weekends, and the first live dividend events.
The framework runs on a five-part test. A ticker is approved on a venue when its equity perpetual holds $25mm or more of one-sided open interest on a 14-day average, has at least 30 days of funding history, references a listed underlying, is not a leveraged or inverse product, and a matching tokenized spot instrument trades on the same venue. [2] Applied today, that test admits 17 names on Binance and 3 on OKX, and none yet on Bybit or Kraken.
Binance is the natural starting point. The venue holds $2.14bn of one-sided open interest across its qualifying pairs, and it comes equipped with both bStocks — tokenized spot collateral — and USDT-denominated equity perpetuals, letting Ethena run both sides of the trade on one platform.
OKX is emerging as a genuine second venue. [2] This makes OKX a genuine second venue with the same clean single-venue construction as Binance, not a cross-venue patchwork.
The matching instrument rule exists to prevent a specific failure. SK Hynix's Korean ordinary share perpetual on OKX carries $57mm of open interest and the richest funding in OKX's equity perpetual complex, roughly 74% annualized over the trailing 90 days — but the xStock tracks the company's Nasdaq listing while the perpetual tracks the Korean line. [2] A hedge across them is not a hedge. The name joins the approved list the moment a matching spot instrument exists.
Instruments that look equivalent often diverge under pressure. The entire architecture of this trade depends on the spot leg and the perpetual leg tracking the same thing — not approximately the same thing, but the same listing, on the same venue, in the same currency.
Bybit qualifies none of its names yet, though SpaceX averaged $24.29mm of one-sided open interest on the fourteen days ending August 25th — 97% of the $25mm threshold. [2] The two-publication rule, which requires a name to clear the test on two consecutive weekly publication dates before it is added, is what keeps a borderline ticker from slipping in on a single favorable window.
SpaceX is the case the framework was built to handle: it would have passed on a window ending two days earlier, at $25.29mm, because its open interest has been falling from a peak above $36mm earlier in the month. [2] The two-publication rule stopped it. Kraken, the home venue of xStocks, qualifies nothing; its own equity perpetuals sit at $9.3mm across fourteen contracts.
The carry numbers have already moved. On Binance, the approved names averaged roughly 18% annualized in late July and average roughly 7% today, with two names currently printing negative. [2] The OKX approved names run between 8% and 16%. The framework does not assume carry persists — the hurdle rate governs entry, and positions unwind when net carry stays negative.
The backtested hedge held through every event the team measured. Across 37 matched earnings events, the underlying gapped 9.9% on average while the hedged position moved 20.3 basis points on average, with the worst single outcome a loss of 81.7 basis points. [2] Across 400 weekend and holiday windows, divergence averaged 14.9 basis points. The sample includes real stress: SpaceX's 13.6% earnings drop and 15.8% rebound, and Bitcoin's 21% three-day rally in late August.
Young tokens are the risky ones. Basis dispersion runs 41 to 48 basis points in a token's first two days and settles at 13.2 basis points after two weeks. [2] The 30-day funding requirement seasons the perpetual, not the token, so a newly listed token paired with an established perpetual can clear the test while its own book is days old. Apple is the live example — approved with a token 27 days old against a perpetual with 143 days of funding. The sizing guidance closes that gap by giving a newly listed token no funded size in its first 14 days.
Ethena's Risk Committee calls the closed-market hours problem the strategy's "deepest structural risk." [1] U.S. stocks close while their tokenized versions and perpetuals keep trading — roughly 70% of the hours in a week. [2] During those hours, Binance builds its index from the perpetual's own order book, so the price that decides whether the short gets liquidated comes from the same thin crypto markets the trade sits in. A hard push in a thin book could liquidate the short at a real loss while the matching gain on the token cannot be sold at size.
The controls Kairos recommends are direct: continuous comparison of each venue index against the last real stock price, carrying extra stablecoin margin of at least 10% of short notional over weekends and halving exposure through earnings, or simply closing positions before the US market close going into a weekend and before the close on earnings day. [2] Three conditions trigger an automatic halt and same-day escalation to the Committee — any change to the implementation, upgrade authority, administrative roles, or pause roles behind a held token; a backing or reconciliation failure at either issuer; and an index divergence exceeding defined thresholds for more than 15 minutes.
The bStocks approval carries a condition. Holders have no proprietary interest in the backing shares, and the issuer retains broad flexibility over the underlying and over corporate actions. [2] Every bStock token sits behind one upgrade key that remains a single externally owned account with no multisig and no timelock. Ethena is negotiating a side letter covering a confirmed custodian with lending restrictions, an inventory reconciliation by someone outside the Binance group, the audit reports behind the issuer's published formal verification claim together with a key management plan for the shared upgrade key, guaranteed creation and redemption access at committed size, definitive dividend treatment in writing, and a binding corporate action methodology.
xStocks carry a stronger disclosure stack. Named custodians are barred from lending the shares, live onchain proof of reserve is available, and direct redemption is at net asset value. [2] The product has grown to roughly 714 products with about $799mm of float as of August 26th, spanning ten chains plus a venue-native deployment. The remaining concerns — stacked roles for the Kraken group, a dividend reinvestment rebase during its adjustment window — are flagged as a short follow-on review rather than a blocker.
Position limits are set against order book depth, not headline open interest. On Binance, books quote roughly $0.56mm per side on the deepest name and far less on most, so depth-based caps land well below what open interest alone would suggest. [2] The framework caps exposure at no more than 10% of the perpetual's open interest, no more than 20% of the token's circulating supply, and no more than half the visible order book depth within 1% of mid, measured at the 25th percentile of the trailing series.
The oldest matched pair in the dataset has 75 days of history. [2] That is long enough to cover 37 earnings events and several weekend windows, but it covers one market regime. The framework is explicit about it: sizing discipline and staged growth carry the weight that confidence cannot yet.
Meanwhile, Ethena's token is moving. ENA has climbed roughly 60% over the past month, from roughly $0.14 to roughly $0.23. [1] USDe supply sits around $4.9B, putting it closer to the fee switch's first trigger: a $7.5B 14-day average supply, at which point Ethena will begin directing a portion of protocol revenue toward ENA buybacks.
The equity basis trade is not a bet on any stock. It is a bet on the persistence of a spread, the reliability of a venue, and the stability of infrastructure that has existed, in most cases, for less than a year. Those are different risks than the ones Ethena started with.
The framework Kairos built is deliberately conservative — simple enough to run without judgment, sized against the weakest leg, and built to halt before desk discretion becomes an excuse. [2] Whether it survives contact with a real market dislocation, a stale bStock row, or a thin Friday night book is what the next year of trading will answer. Ethena has spent two years making crypto funding rates into a dollar. Now it wants to do the same with the funding rates that traders pay to hold perpetuals on Apple and SpaceX. The machinery is ready. The track record is not.
