Science's Referee Is Now in the Ring
The National Academies built its authority by staying above the fray. A climate attribution report may end that strategy for good.

That streak is now under serious pressure. [1] A committee formed during the Biden administration is evaluating the scientific standing of attribution studies, and the industry is fighting back hard. [1]
The trigger was a judicial reference manual. [2] Republican state attorneys general demanded the Federal Judicial Center pull the chapter; it immediately caved. [1] The National Academies declined to remove the version already posted on its own website. [1]
Congress escalated. A group of 11 representatives sent a letter to the head of the Office of Management and Budget in which they 'respectfully urged' the office's director to 'investigate whether NASEM should be suspended or debarred from all federal funding under your jurisdiction.' [1] Oil companies, meanwhile, hired third parties to file for access to the emails of committee members who work at public universities. [1]
The stakes are not merely institutional. When the tools of legal discovery get aimed at scientific committees, the chilling effect reaches every researcher willing to serve. Neutrality, it turns out, is not a shield.
[1] If judges accept that chain of evidence, the liability exposure shifts dramatically. That is precisely why the fight over one scientific report has become a fight over the institution itself. [1]
