Show Up or Lose: Greenlight America's Local Play

Clean energy doesn't lose most local permit fights because opponents are right. It loses because supporters don't show up. That's the premise behind Greenlight America, a nonprofit founded by Matt Traldi that tracks county hearings and zoning votes, then recruits local advocates to attend. [1]

The numbers have moved fast. 4 gigawatts of clean energy in its first year. By late 2025, that annual figure reached 20.[1]

The pace of individual wins reflects a broader market sprint. Wood Mackenzie estimates 216 to 240 gigawatts of solar, plus roughly 20 gigawatts of wind, have been safe harbored under those rules. Greenlight scored eight local wins in a single day last month, compared with four wins in an entire quarter in 2025. [1]

The model's real bet is on local credibility over imported advocacy. Voices from within a community carry weight that outside organizers rarely match — a lesson that scales whether the county leans left or right.

Traldi argues that local partners — conservative groups included — outperform outside advocates at these hearings. Greenlight's early warning system combines direct developer relationships with web scrapers and algorithmic review of thousands of government agendas across more than 3,100 US counties. The organization is philanthropically funded and has raised almost $20 million in the current year. [1]

The field Greenlight is building into didn't exist a few years ago. Whether it can staff up fast enough to cover every local decision before the 2028 permitting deadline will determine how much of that safe-harbored pipeline actually gets built. [1]

Supporters are out there in every community, but they would not usually show up, and clean energy would lose by forfeit as a result.Matt Traldi
