Sweden Sends Gripens to Finland's Russian Border

Sweden will deploy Gripen fighter jets and warships to Finland in the near term to patrol risk areas along the Finnish-Russian border, following a formal request from Helsinki — and a series of air incursions this year, including ones that temporarily shut down Finnish airports. [3]

Finland and Sweden announced on Friday an expansion of their defence partnership to include enhanced territorial surveillance and protection of territorial integrity, with the countries working together to strengthen Finland's capability to detect and counter unmanned aerial vehicles. [3] Sweden may also send anti-drone units if the need arises during the autumn. [3]

The incidents driving the pact include a series of aerial incursions linked to Russia's war against Ukraine — including suspected stray armed drones that Ukraine had aimed at Russian targets. [3] Finland has also faced a suspected drone flying in local airspace, an event that led to the deployment of Finnish F-18 hornets over Helsinki and the Gulf of Finland. [1] Earlier this year, Finland committed €50.2 million ($58.3 million) to new counter-drone capabilities, with €44 million earmarked for the Finnish Border Guard. [1]

What the agreement signals is less about a single capability gap than about how NATO's eastern flank is quietly reshaping itself — bilateral, practical, and incremental rather than declarative.

[1] The architecture is being built in public, one patrol route at a time.
